History and Milestones

NATIONAL NEONATAOLOGY FORUM KARNATAKA STATE

NNF Karnataka was formed in 1994. There have been several activities since 1991 all over the state that included continued medical education (CME) programs, neonatal resuscitation courses, guest lectures by eminent faculty, post-graduate student courses, state conferences and CMEs for nurses. The NNF Karnataka organization has been intent on carrying out the NNF India activities and agenda along with educational activities. The organization has come a long way indeed and has gained momentum in membership, activities and collaborative programs all with the target of improving newborn health care in the state.

Milestones

Official National neonatology Forum (NNF) activities in Karnataka State began in August 1991 when the then president NNF (Dr. D K Guha) appointed a state coordinator (Dr. SwarnaRekha) for Karnataka State.

A meeting was held during the South Zone Conference in September 1991 and plans were chalked out for the NNF activities in the state.

  1. The first NALS Course was held in Bangalore in November – December 1991.

  2. In-service training programme for pediatricians and nurses was started in 92-93. During this period 12 doctors and 6 nurses underwent training. Recognized centers at that time were
    • St.John’s Medical College Hospital
    • M S Ramaiah Medical College Hospital
    • KEM Manipal

  3.  Operationalization  of District newborn care 94-95 in Chikkamangalur and Kolar district
    NNF had supplied essential newborn care equipment to the above mentioned districts and site visits were made to check / ensure the use of these equipment. Participants were Dr. P PMaiya, Dr. SwarnaRekha and Dr. S D Subba Rao

  4. National neonatal – perinatal data base collection 1995. The participating centers for this were MS Ramaiah Medical College Hospital, St.John’s Medical college Hospital and Manipal Hospital.

  5. District Medical Officers training programme – ongoing program. The following districts to be covered: Mandya / Tumkur / Mysore. Faculty were Dr. P PMaiya, Dr. SwarnaRekha and Dr. Brig. Sarkar

  6. Quiz programme in Neonatology for postgraduates: Divisional co-ordinators were Dr. SwarnaRekha and Dr. P PMaiya

  7. Scientific papers first instituted in the Belgaum conference. Award papers started from 7th state level conference.

  8. PAN was secured in the year 2012
